Three De Havilland "Comets" were specially produced for the England to Australia Air Race in 1934. The "Comet" flown by C. W. A. Scott and Tom Campbell Black won the race by flying the 11,323 miles from Mildenhall to Melbourne in 71 hours. 18 sec's. Since then the "Comet" has made many outstanding flights, including recently those of Flying-Officer Clouston—England to Cape Town and back in under 11 days (24,000 miles in 261 hrs.). Powered by two 205 h.p. "Gipsy-Six" II motors, the "Comet" has a top speed of 235 m.p.h. at 10,000 ft. and cruises at 200 m.p.h. for 2,580 miles. Its maximum weight is 5,550 lb., of which more than 2,000 lb. is petrol and oil.
