S. 6 machine, piloted by Lt. Off. H. R. D. Waghorn, won the 1929 Schneider
Trophy Contest at Spithead at an average speed of 328.63 m.p.h. Later,
piloted by Sq. Ldr. Orlebar, the S.6 captured the world's speed record
over a 3 km. (1.86 miles) course at an average speed of 357.7 m.p.h.
The engine is a Rolls-Royce "R" twelve-cylinder water cooled
engine. The cooling water from the engine passes over both surfaces
of the wing, which has a double skin of duralumin especially designed
for the purpose. The machine is built entirely of duralumin. The petrol
is carried in the floats. |
